New GST rates in 2026 (GST 2.0)
At its 56th meeting on 3 September 2025, the GST Council replaced the five-slab structure of 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% with a simpler set of rates. They apply to supplies made on or after 22 September 2025, and they are the rates this calculator uses for 2026.
| Rate | What it covers | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | Essentials such as UHT milk, paneer and Indian breads | Unchanged |
| 5% | Merit rate for everyday goods and services | Almost every item from the old 12% slab moved here |
| 18% | Standard rate for most goods and services | Around 90% of the old 28% slab moved here, including ACs, TVs and small cars |
| 40% | Pan masala, tobacco, aerated drinks and select luxury goods | New rate |
| 3% | Gold and silver | Unchanged |
| 0.25% / 1.5% | Rough diamonds / cut and polished diamonds | Unchanged |
The rate for a particular item depends on its HSN code (goods) or SAC code (services). Look yours up with the HSN/SAC code finder, or read our full GST 2.0 breakdown.
How to calculate GST
Adding GST to a price
GST = Base × Rate ÷ 100
₹10,000 at 18%: GST is ₹1,800, so the invoice total is ₹11,800.
Removing GST from a price
Base = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate)
₹11,800 including 18%: the base is ₹10,000 and the GST inside it is ₹1,800 — not 18% of ₹11,800, which would wrongly give ₹2,124.
CGST and SGST, or IGST?
Within the same state the tax is split equally — ₹1,800 at 18% becomes ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST (9% + 9%). For a supply to another state, the whole ₹1,800 is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same either way. For registration and return filing, see our GST services.
GST calculator FAQs
What are the new GST rates in 2026?
Since 22 September 2025, GST in India runs on four main rates: 0% for essentials, 5% as the merit rate, 18% as the standard rate, and 40% for pan masala, tobacco, aerated drinks and select luxury goods. Special rates continue alongside them — 3% on gold and silver, 0.25% on rough diamonds and 1.5% on cut and polished diamonds. The change was approved at the 56th GST Council meeting on 3 September 2025 and is commonly called GST 2.0.
Have the 12% and 28% GST slabs been removed?
Yes. From 22 September 2025, almost every item in the 12% slab moved to 5%, and around 90% of items in the 28% slab moved to 18%, with the rest going to 40%. The calculator still offers 12% and 28% under old rates, because invoices, credit notes and assessments for supplies made before that date are still worked out at the rates that applied then.
How do I calculate GST on an amount?
Multiply the amount before tax by the GST rate and divide by 100. For ₹10,000 at 18%, GST is ₹10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800, so the total is ₹11,800. Within the same state that ₹1,800 is split into ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST; for a supply to another state it is charged as ₹1,800 IGST.
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Use Base = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate). For ₹11,800 including 18% GST, the base is ₹11,800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000, and the GST inside it is ₹1,800. Taking 18% of ₹11,800 would give ₹2,124, which is wrong — the tax is a share of the base price, not of the total. Choose Remove GST in the calculator to do this automatically.
When is CGST and SGST charged, and when IGST?
It depends on the place of supply. If the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST, so 18% becomes 9% + 9%. If they are in different states, or the goods are imported, the full rate is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same either way; only the split changes.
Does this GST calculator include compensation cess?
No. Compensation cess was removed on most goods from 22 September 2025 and now applies only to certain tobacco and pan masala products. If you deal in those, add the applicable cess separately.
How do I know which GST rate applies to my product or service?
The rate is set by the HSN code for goods or the SAC code for services, and it can differ between items that look similar. Look up the code with our HSN/SAC code finder, then use that rate here. If you are unsure how a supply should be classified, our GST team can check it for you.
