FSSAI New Rules 2026: Lifetime License & ₹1.5 Crore Limit — What Every Food Business Must Know

If you run a food business in India — whether it's a small tea stall, a home kitchen, a restaurant, or a food truck — 2026 brings some of the biggest changes FSSAI has made in years. And the good news? Most of these changes make life easier for small business owners.

What is FSSAI and Why Does It Matter?

FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is the government body that regulates food safety in the country. Before you can sell any food product or run a food business in India, you need an FSSAI registration or license. Without it, you can face heavy penalties or even get your business shut down.

The Big News: FSSAI Licenses Now Have Lifetime Validity

Earlier, FSSAI licenses had to be renewed every 1 to 5 years — a process that was time-consuming and often costly. From April 1, 2026, this has changed completely. FSSAI licenses and registrations now come with lifetime validity. Once you get your license, you do not have to renew it again and again. You only need to pay the annual fee and follow the food safety regulations.

New Turnover Limit: ₹1.5 Crore for Basic Registration

Earlier, only businesses with a turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs per year could apply for basic FSSAI registration. From 2026, the basic registration limit has been raised to ₹1.5 crore per year — a 12x increase. This means lakhs of small food businesses — home bakers, tiffin services, street food vendors, small eateries — can now simply apply for basic registration. It is quicker, easier, and cheaper.

Who Benefits the Most?

Street vendors and hawkers, home-based food businesses (cloud kitchens, home bakers, tiffin services), food truck operators, small manufacturers, and cottage food businesses all benefit greatly from the new FSSAI rules.

Street Vendors Get Automatic Registration

If your food business is already registered under the Street Vendors Act, 2014, you are now automatically considered registered under FSSAI as well. You don't need to apply separately. This is a big step towards making India's informal food economy more compliant and protected.

Risk-Based Inspections: What Does It Mean for You?

FSSAI has introduced a risk-based inspection system. Low-risk businesses like small home kitchens or basic food stalls will face fewer inspections. This means less hassle for genuinely compliant small businesses.

What Should You Do Now?

If you are a food business owner in India and do not yet have an FSSAI registration or license, now is the best time to get one. The process has become simpler, the costs are lower for small businesses, and the lifetime validity means you won't have to deal with renewals constantly.
