How to Verify a GST Number/GSTIN 2026

Before you pay a supplier or trust an invoice, it pays to check that their GST number is real. A fake or wrong GSTIN can cost you your input tax credit — and invite a notice. The good news: verifying a GST number takes about 30 seconds and is completely free. Here is how to do it in 2026.
What is a GSTIN?
A GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is a unique 15-character code given to every registered business. Every GST invoice must show it. If a supplier cannot give you a valid GSTIN, you should not be paying GST to them.
How to verify a GST number online (free)
- Go to the official GST portal and open Search Taxpayer > Search by GSTIN/UIN.
- Enter the 15-digit GST number from the invoice.
- Complete the captcha and click search.
If the number is genuine, you will instantly see the legal name of the business, its status (Active or Cancelled), registration date, business type, and state. If nothing shows up, the number is invalid.
What the 15 digits mean
- First 2 digits — the state code (for example, 24 is Gujarat).
- Next 10 digits — the business PAN.
- 13th digit — entity number for that PAN in the state.
- 14th digit — the letter Z by default.
- 15th digit — a check code.
A quick tip: the 10 middle digits are the PAN, so the GSTIN should match the supplier's PAN on the invoice.
How to spot a fake GST number
- The GSTIN does not appear on the portal, or shows a different business name.
- The status shows Cancelled — you cannot claim credit on invoices dated after cancellation.
- The state code does not match the supplier's address.
- The 10 middle digits do not match the PAN on the invoice.
Why this matters for your input tax credit
Under the 2026 rules, your input tax credit is tied to what your supplier actually reports. If you pay GST to a fake or cancelled GSTIN, you lose the credit and carry the cost yourself. A 30-second check before payment protects your money.

FAQs
Is it free to verify a GST number?
Yes. GSTIN verification on the official GST portal is completely free and does not need a login.
How do I know if a GST number is fake?
Enter it on the portal's Search Taxpayer tool. If it does not appear, shows a different name, or is marked Cancelled, do not rely on it.
Can I claim ITC on a cancelled GSTIN?
No. You cannot claim input tax credit on invoices issued after a supplier's registration is cancelled.
