TReDS for MSMEs in 2026: Get Paid in 48 Hours on Invoices to Big Buyers, the Rs 250 Crore Onboarding Rule, Costs and How to Register

TReDS lets MSMEs get paid within a day or two on invoices raised on big buyers, at a rate set by the buyer's credit, without taking a loan.

Hetalben runs a carton and packaging unit in Rajkot. Her biggest customer, a large food company, pays in 90 days, so her cash credit limit is always full and she pays interest on money that is really hers. Her bank manager has suggested TReDS, and her customer's purchase team says they are already on it. She wants to know what it costs, whether it counts as a loan and how to start.

Delayed payment is the single biggest cash problem for small suppliers in Saurashtra. Since big companies were made to join TReDS, it has become one of the cheapest ways for an MSME to turn invoices into cash. Here is how it works in 2026.

Our team handles TReDS registration, Udyam, documentation and the accounting for discounted invoices. Call or WhatsApp +91 82005 28355, or see the details at the end of this guide.

How TReDS works

  1. Register: the MSME and the buyer register on an RBI-authorised platform such as RXIL, M1xchange or Invoicemart.
  2. Upload: the MSME uploads the invoice after supplying the goods or services.
  3. Accept: the buyer confirms the invoice and the due date on the platform.
  4. Bid: banks and finance companies bid a discount rate.
  5. Get paid: the MSME accepts the best bid and receives the money, usually within 24 to 48 hours.
  6. Settle: on the due date, the buyer pays the financier directly.

Who must be on TReDS

  • Big buyers: companies with turnover above Rs 250 crore, and all central public sector enterprises, had to register by 31 March 2025, under a notification of 7 November 2024.
  • Earlier limit: this replaced the 2018 rule, which covered companies above Rs 500 crore.
  • Sellers: any MSME with Udyam registration can join as a seller. See Udyam registration.

What it costs

  • Discount: the financier keeps a discount for the days until the due date, at a rate linked to the buyer's credit rating, which is often lower than an MSME's cash credit rate.
  • Platform fees: small registration and transaction fees, which carry GST.
  • No GST on the discount: it is treated like interest, which is exempt.
  • Tax: the discount is a business expense, like interest on a loan.

Why it beats a loan

  • Without recourse: once paid, the MSME is not liable if the buyer defaults, so the money is not a loan.
  • Cleaner balance sheet: receivables turn into cash without adding debt, which helps when you apply for a term loan. See business loans with CGTMSE.
  • No collateral: the financier relies on the buyer's credit, not your property.
  • Your choice: discount only the invoices you need, when you need the cash.

How to register

  • Documents: PAN, GST and Udyam certificates, bank account details, KYC of the owners or directors, and a board resolution for companies.
  • Agreements: signed digitally with the platform.
  • Tell your buyers: share your platform ID so they can accept your invoices.
  • Clean invoices: invoice numbers, GSTIN and amounts must match your GST returns, or the buyer cannot accept them.

When the buyer still does not pay

  • The 45-day rule: micro and small suppliers must be paid within 45 days where there is an agreement, or within 15 days otherwise, or the buyer owes interest at three times the bank rate. See MSME payment not received in 45 days.
  • The buyer's tax: unpaid dues to micro and small suppliers can cost the buyer its tax deduction. See the 45-day payment rule.

Back to Hetalben. She registers on a TReDS platform with her Udyam, GST and bank details, and shares her ID with the food company, which accepts her invoices within two days of upload. Financiers bid on the strength of the buyer's rating, and she receives her money in 48 hours at a lower rate than her cash credit. Her cash credit use falls, her balance sheet shows less debt, and the discount is booked as a finance cost in her books.
